The Ontario Provincial Police laid assault and obstruction charges on top of criminal harassment charges against a 41-year-man Wednesday because of an outburst and alleged attack on an officer after a court proceeding.

S, D & G OPP Acting Sgt. Hameen Kahn was escorting witnesses in a criminal harassment trial out of a Cornwall courtroom at 4 p. m. when the accused, a 41-year-old man, got upset and began yelling out obscenities.

Kahn warned the accused to stop his rude behaviour. Rather than heed Kahn’s advice, the accused assaulted the officer, police said.

His forts to resist arrest prompted a second officer, Special Const. Ron Lefebvre, to help restrain the accused.

The defendant was taken into custody and held for another court apearance to deal with new charges of assaulting a peace officer and obstructing and resisting a peace officer.
